Join us for a beautiful walk on the beach Saturday, July 12 from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Our goal is to see if we can observe any turtle nests hatching or mother turtles laying eggs. The event is limited to 12 people, and there is no guarantee that you’ll see anything besides our beautiful beaches. Then again, we’re scuba divers! We’re never guaranteed we’re going to see anything, until mother nature shows us her wonderful treasures.
When you are looking for a turtle nest that is hatching, the temperature of the sand and the age of the nest both play critical roles. As one local expert explained, an afternoon rain will cool the sand and possibly lead to a nest hatching earlier in the evening, but if not, the nests may hatch much later. Most hatchlings emerge between June and August, about 50–60 days after eggs are laid. Many conservationists believe that hatchlings may instinctively emerge more often during full moons, when visibility is better and tides are higher.
There is also the possibility that we may find a mother turtle coming onshore to deposit her eggs. We won’t know until we go look.
The Turtle Trek will take place in Pompano Beach and will combine an educational presentation on the dos and don’ts of nighttime beach walks looking for turtles with our actual excursion. This event is a no-touch, no-interference event, and member compliance is a requirement. NOTE: absolutely no flashlights, torches or flash photography are allowed on this walk. Please bring a bottle of water and good walking shoes. Members are not required to spend the entire time with the group, and if the evening is particularly active some members may choose to stay later at their discretion.
