Breaking Stereotypes in the Dive Scene: Stories of LGBTQIA+ Trailblazers

There have always been LGBTQIA+ scuba divers like Joe Mankowski and Christopher Duncan, pictured here in Bonaire in 2016 on their honeymoon. Wherever we go, however, there’s always the question of safety and representation. There are many dive destinations where it is physically dangerous to be out about your sexual orientation (thankfully not Bonaire). Throw into that the emotional wringer of being heckled and ostracized on dive trips, and many LGBTQIA+ divers choose to jump back into the closet for a brief time while among other divers.

And historically, scuba diving has been perceived as a pursuit reserved for a male-dominated and heteronormative demographic. However, beneath the surface lies a world rich with diversity — not just in marine life but in the people who explore it. LGBTQIA+ individuals are actively breaking stereotypes in the dive scene, redefining what it means to be a diver while building a supportive and vibrant community. Their stories show how shared passions can transcend societal norms and foster meaningful connections.

Overcoming Traditional Norms in the Diving Community

The perceptions of scuba diving being primarily for straight men are slowly changing as LGBTQIA+ divers embrace their identities and challenge the status quo.

LGBTQIA+ individuals are forging their paths as dive instructors, explorers, marine conservationists, and enthusiasts. They are not only shattering stereotypes about who belongs in the diving world but also enriching the community by creating inclusive spaces. Dive organizations like Out Scuba, provide platforms for LGBTQIA+ divers to connect, share experiences, and celebrate their mutual love for marine exploration.

Stories of LGBTQIA+ Trailblazers

Even though we’ve all felt invisible at times, there have been LGBTQIA+ trailblazers present since the founding of the sport. With the progression of equal rights that began at the Stonewall Inn and reverberated throughout society since, our scuba closet doors have been on rusty hinges since the mid-1980s. Here are three inclusive organizations that you need to know about, and dive with!

Barnacle Busters: A Legacy of Inclusivity in Diving

Founded in 1988 by three passionate gay dive enthusiasts, the Barnacle Busters Gay Scuba Club has grown into one of the largest and oldest LGBTQIA+ dive clubs in the United States. Based in Southern California, the club boasts a membership of over 150 individuals, united by their love for scuba diving and their commitment to fostering an inclusive community. From its inception, Barnacle Busters has been a trailblazer in breaking barriers, providing a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ divers to connect, learn, and explore the underwater world.

The club organizes a variety of activities, including monthly meetings, dive trips to iconic locations like Catalina Island and the Channel Islands, and even international excursions to destinations such as Cozumel and the Indo-Pacific. Beyond diving, Barnacle Busters actively participates in marine conservation efforts, such as underwater cleanups and educational programs for schools. Their dedication to inclusivity and environmental stewardship has made them a cornerstone of the LGBTQIA+ diving community, inspiring others to embrace diversity both above and below the surface.

Gay and Lesbian Underwater Group (GLUG)

The Gay and Lesbian Underwater Group (GLUG), based in the United Kingdom and founded in 1992, is a vibrant community that brings together LGBTQIA+ divers who share a passion for exploring the underwater world. Founded with the goal of creating a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ individuals, GLSC has grown into a well-respected organization that fosters camaraderie, adventure, and marine conservation.

GLSC organizes a variety of activities, including local dive trips, international excursions, and social events. These gatherings provide members with opportunities to connect, share experiences, and build lasting friendships. The club is particularly known for its welcoming atmosphere, where divers of all skill levels — whether beginners or seasoned professionals — can feel supported and encouraged.

In addition to its recreational activities, GLSC is committed to promoting marine conservation and environmental awareness. Members often participate in underwater cleanups and other initiatives aimed at protecting the ocean’s delicate ecosystems. By combining their love for diving with a dedication to sustainability, GLSC members exemplify the positive impact that a united community can have on the environment.

Rainbow Divers

Rainbow Divers, established in Vietnam in 1997, is a trailblazing dive center that has become a cornerstone of the LGBTQIA+ diving community in Southeast Asia. Founded by Jeremy Stein, Rainbow Divers was the first PADI-certified dive center in Vietnam and has since expanded to multiple locations, including Nha Trang, Whale Island, and Phu Quoc. The organization is renowned for its commitment to inclusivity, professionalism, and marine conservation.

Rainbow Divers offers a full range of PADI courses, from beginner certifications to advanced training for divemasters and instructors. The dive center is known for its friendly and supportive environment, where LGBTQIA+ divers and allies can feel at ease while exploring Vietnam’s stunning underwater landscapes. With its emphasis on safety and quality, Rainbow Divers has earned a reputation as one of the premier dive centers in the region.

Beyond its diving programs, Rainbow Divers actively engages in marine conservation efforts. The organization collaborates with local communities and international partners to protect coral reefs, reduce pollution, and raise awareness about the importance of preserving marine biodiversity. These initiatives reflect Rainbow Divers’ dedication to creating a sustainable future for the ocean and its inhabitants.

Rainbow Divers also serves as a hub for LGBTQIA+ divers to connect and share their experiences. By fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect, the dive center has become a beacon of inclusivity in the diving world, inspiring others to embrace diversity both above and below the surface.

How Passions Bring People Together

One of the most profound aspects of scuba diving is its ability to unite individuals through a shared love for the underwater world. The LGBTQIA+ diving community exemplifies how mutual passions can bridge divides and create lasting friendships.

Marine Conservation as a Common Goal: Many LGBTQIA+ divers actively participate in marine conservation projects, from coral restoration to underwater cleanups. By collaborating on these initiatives, they contribute to preserving the marine ecosystem while fostering a sense of unity and purpose.

Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces: The LGBTQIA+ diving community actively works to dismantle barriers and foster inclusivity. By organizing events, training sessions, and social gatherings, these groups ensure that every diver feels valued and supported.

Education and Awareness: LGBTQIA+ divers often play a role in educating others about the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the diving community. Their advocacy efforts challenge traditional norms and inspire others to embrace a more open-minded perspective.

Why Breaking Stereotypes Matters

Breaking stereotypes in the dive scene is about more than just representation—it’s about empowering individuals to embrace their true selves and discover their potential. Here’s why it matters:

Representation Inspires Others: When LGBTQIA+ individuals see others thriving in the diving community, it reinforces the idea that they, too, belong. Representation breaks down psychological barriers and encourages participation.

Diversity Enriches the Community: The diving world benefits from the unique perspectives and experiences that LGBTQIA+ individuals bring. Inclusivity fosters creativity, innovation, and a deeper appreciation for the richness of human and marine life.

Challenging Norms Leads to Growth: As stereotypes are dismantled, the diving community evolves into a more welcoming and supportive space for all. This growth benefits everyone, regardless of identity.

Building an Inclusive Future

Looking ahead, the diving community has the opportunity to continue evolving into a space where everyone feels welcome. Here are some actionable steps to support this vision:

Promote Representation: Dive organizations can spotlight LGBTQIA+ divers and their achievements through social media, events, and collaborations.

Foster Allyship: Allies play a crucial role in advocating for inclusivity. By listening, learning, and standing in solidarity, allies help create a supportive environment.

Expand Access: Efforts to make diving more accessible, such as offering scholarships or training programs for underrepresented groups, can encourage greater participation.

Celebrate Diversity: Embracing diversity in all its forms — be it gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or abilities—enriches the diving community and strengthens its sense of unity.

Conclusion

The diving world is as diverse as the ocean itself, with individuals from all walks of life contributing to its beauty and vitality. LGBTQIA+ trailblazers are challenging traditional norms, fostering inclusivity, and building connections that transcend boundaries. Their stories remind us that, beneath the surface, we are all part of a larger, interconnected world.

As we celebrate these achievements, let us continue to embrace diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that the diving community remains a place where everyone can explore, learn, and thrive.
