Diving Barracuda Reef just south of the Port of Fort Lauderdale feels like uncovering a hidden gem that few divers ever experience. Unlike the heavily trafficked reefs to the north, Barracuda Reef offers a sense of untouched wilderness beneath the waves. The reef formations are vibrant and sprawling, with schools of fish weaving through the currents. The captain notes that lobsters are especially plentiful here, tucked into crevices and waiting to be spotted by sharp-eyed divers. Lionfish, with their striking spines and flowing fins, add an exotic flair to the reefscape, making every descent a thrilling encounter with marine life that thrives in this less-visited sanctuary.

As our second dive of the day, we’ve been promised a “Captain’s Surprise.” A reef or wreck that rewards divers with an abundance of life and a sense of discovery. Because it’s off the beaten path, both of these sites feel secretive, as if they belong only to those willing to explore south of the port. The natural hideaways for make excellent hunting grounds for lobsters and lionfish. With fewer divers frequenting these sites, the reefs remain rich and lively, offering a rare chance to experience Fort Lauderdale’s underwater world in its most pristine and exhilarating form.

Trip cost is $90 base, plus $30 for tanks (air or nitrox), weights and snacks included. Gear rental available for an extra fee. If you have your 50% off coupon from the Winter Meeting, be certain to bring that with you!

Out Scuba believes that better trained divers make safer divers and increases the enjoyment of all participants on any dive. We include any training session(s) on our calendar because it is by an Out Scuba instructor member, offered only to Out Scuba members and includes reduced rates or added benefits you would not get if you registered for the training directly. Out Scuba, however, does not offer training, does not benefit financially from registrations, does not certify divers or instructors, does not vet or approve the instructors, and does not recommend any training or agency to you.
