2025 Holiday Potluck a Huge Success

Keat Ooi waxes poetic about Blackwater Diving

We had almost 30 people attend our latest quarterly meeting on December 14th at Scuba Star in Wilton Manors. And the food… the food was out of this world. We decided to do a holiday potluck dessert and our members produced! We had an 8-foot table just full of desserts and holiday appetizers.

The real star of the evening was our own Keat Ooi, who gave a presentation of his macro photography taken while doing Blackwater Diving. These photographs of the tiniest plankton that take part each night in “The Great Migration” from depth to the surface where they can feed on phytoplankton is one of the biggest energy generators in our oceans and puts on an amazing display for those with the fortitude to look for it.

Essentially, Blackwater Diving takes place at depths of approximately 40 to 60 feet in the dark of night out in the Gulf Stream. The boat hangs a set of lights beneath to attract the critters, and divers move with the boat, the lights and the Gulf Stream as they look for animals that are often less than 1/2″ long.

The most important thing besides general experience, according to Keat, is the complete mastery of your buoyancy.

In addition to the food, camaraderie and presentation, members and new members got to hear some exciting offers from our hosts at Scuba Star and about our club plans for 2026. Speaking of the great offer from Scuba Star, make sure you show your membership card to Dan or Robin when you take advantage of their offer of 30% off all in-store merchandise for Out Scuba members.
